06.09.2010 Europe shows global leadership in recycling
(
Company news
)
The latest Monitoring report of the European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) shows that Europe has achieved a world record level of paper recycling in 2009. The rate reached 72.2% which is again higher than the target set in its Commitment for 2010 of 66%. The total amount recycled in paper mills came to 58 million tonnes in 2009.
“The economic recession continued in 2009 and made the paper consumption drop to the level of 1998. This, together with industry’s continued effort to increase recycling made, for the second year in a row, the recycling rate jump up, resulting in a record high 72.2%.” explained Jori Ringman, Secretary of the ERPC. The recycling rate is the ratio between the recycling and the consumption of paper. A swing in the opposite direction may occur when the economy recovers as recycling may not be able to immediately match up to the reviving paper consumption; the recycling rate is likely to drop, temporarily. In 2010 the recycling rate is estimated to be under 70%, closer to the original target of 66% (±1.5%-points). “Recycling is intrinsically a self-adjusting mechanism which, with a lag of three to six months, will adapt to any volume of consumption”, Ringman reminded. “In the trend, the industry will continue on its path to meeting ambitious targets of recycling paper at a steadily increasing rate in Europe”, he said. Since 1998, the base year of the first voluntary commitment, the paper industry has increased the annual paper recycling by 45%, growing from less than 40 million tonnes of paper recycled annually to 58 million tonnes last year. For the commitment period of 2006 to 2010, PricewaterhouseCoopers has independently verified the recycling rate calculations using the International Standard on Assurance Engagements ISAE 3000. The 14 members of the Council have also made good progress in the qualitative targets laid out in its Commitment particularly with respect to eco-design and waste prevention. 06.09.2010 Marbach High Speed Rubber Cutting System - marbajet is revolutionizing Mexican market
(
Company news
)
The Marbach Group, one of the internationally leading partners of the diecutting and diemaking industry, has recently placed its first marbajet high speed rubber cutting system in Mexico. This well-proven Marbach in-house development is now revolutionizing the Mexican market.
While rubber cutting has only been handwork for Mexican diemakers until today, the marbajet is an efficient way to equip die-shops with a certain degree of automation in order to increase productivity. Being the simplest and safest machine on the market to produce ejection rubber at blazing fast speeds, Marbach’s marbajet allows die-makers and converters of all sizes to turn around jobs faster than ever before.
So, Lasser Cut, a forward thinking die-maker in Mexico City, was looking for a means to increase their production output in an efficient and simple way. The choice was clear: They purchased a marbajet, the latest technology in high-speed ejection rubber production with a very dynamic power unit (70 m/min).
Technology, know-how, service, and parts availability were all important deciding factors for Lasser Cut. As Marbach has half of their marbajet machines installed in North America, parts are stocked at Marbach USA in Elkhart, IN and service personnel are also available from within the USA.
Now, Marbach is looking forward to the expansion of their equipment throughout North America. All interested parties should contact Marbach USA at +1-815-981-4955 for more information on our water jets as well as further products such as lasers, counter cutters, Braille embossing system and materials. 03.09.2010 MYLLYKOSKI SUMMIT 2010: Paper – The King of Media
(
Company news
)
The MYLLYKOSKI SUMMIT taking place this September is now in its fifth year. The Finnish printing paper manufacturer has succeeded in establishing with the SUMMIT a highly reputable forum within the print industry where intensive dialogue can take place between customers and experts. Out of all of the topics discussed in the last few years, one question in particular has been debated again and again: what role does print play in the media mix of the future? That is reason enough to explore answers to it at this year’s SUMMIT, where the motto is “Paper – The King of Media”.
A number of international speakers are lined up for the event including Hanna Pihkola from the VTT Techni¬cal Research Centre of Finland, who will be talking about maintaining ecological equilibrium in the print media. Her analysis proves: the general opinion that print media is environmentally suboptimal is short-sighted. Jacek Utko, designer at Bonnier Business Press Int., will demonstrate in his talk “How design can save print media” just how important target-group design and vision are for newspaper publishers. Jacek has redesigned newspapers from all over the world and succeeded in increasing their circulation by up to 100%.
The viewpoint of the publisher – above all concerning the trends in advertising – will be presented by Dr. Adrian Weser from the Bauer Media Group. Dr. Bauer is also spokesperson for the media research and training teams of the VDZ an organization of German magazine publishers. Well-known media expert Prof. Dr. Jo Groebel will be holding up a mirror to the industry and showing which challenges the printing sector can, and must, actively create. Hoslo Jiwa, founder of Green¬Life CSR, will be talking about sustainable company structures. These are becoming increasingly important and are a component of one of the approaches towards being truly environmentally successful on a global level.
The SUMMIT will close with a look at the situation of the worldwide paper market and its development – and how MYLLYKOSKI, the SUMMIT’s host, responds with strategies and products to the market’s challenges. Discussions about paper as the medium of the future will take place at the one-day MYLLYKOSKI SUMMIT on 21 September 2010 at the Kempinski Hotel, Munich airport. (Myllykoski Paper Oy)

03.09.2010 Jungheinrich Maintains Upward Trend Successfully
(
Company news
)
Dynamic Recovery of the Material Handling Equipment Market/ Incoming Orders Post Strong Growth/Production Output Increased Significantly/Earnings Trend Improved Substantially
The Jungheinrich Group maintained its upward trend in the second quarter of 2010 and closed the first half of 2010 with increases in incoming orders, sales and earnings. One of the drivers was the world economy's sustained recovery, from which the material handling equipment sector benefited, posting strong gains over the relatively small market volume a year earlier.
Global demand for material handling equipment displayed dynamic development over the course of the year, climbing by some 54 per cent in the second quarter of 2010. Accordingly, the world market expanded by 50 per cent to 379.0 thousand trucks (prior year: 253.2 thousand units) in the first half of 2010. All regions participated in this enlargement, albeit recording extremely different growth rates. Asia posted the strongest gain, expanding by 77 per cent. China made a disproportionately large contribution, growing by 103 per cent. Europe's market volume advanced by a total of 27 per cent in the first six months of the year, accelerating in the second quarter by achieving a rate of growth of about 39 per cent. In the first half of 2010, Western Europe posted a gain of 18 per cent, while demand in Eastern Europe increased by 85 per cent. In this context, account must be taken of the fact that the latter's market volume had collapsed by 78 per cent last year. The North American market recorded a rise of 28 per cent.
In the first half of 2010, the value of incoming orders, encompassing all business areas, increased by roughly 12 per cent to 915 million euros (prior year: 819 million euros). This corresponded to a rise of 16 per cent to 482 million euros in the second quarter of 2010 (prior year: 414 million euros). Orders on hand in new truck business totalled 276 million euros as of June 30, 2010, which was 68 million euros, or 33 per cent, higher than the figure at the end of 2009.
Production volume, which tracked the substantial rise in incoming orders with a lag, increased by some 22 per cent to 14.6 thousand trucks in the second quarter of 2010 (prior year: 12.0 thousand units). Production output thus amounted to 27.4 thousand trucks in the first half of 2010 (prior year: 24.1 thousand units)—exceeding last year's comparable volume by nearly 14 per cent.
Net sales were up 7 per cent to 446 million euros in the second quarter of 2010 (prior year: 417 million euros) fully offsetting the shortfall in the first quarter of 2010. As a result, consolidated net sales posted marginal growth in the first half of 2010, rising to 833 million euros (prior year: 830 million euros). All business areas participated in this positive sales trend. New truck business experienced a significant recovery. The short-term hire and used equipment business expanded by a total of around 7 per cent. After-sales services recorded a cumulative growth rate of 4 per cent.
"After our company returned to profitability at the beginning of the year, earnings growth accelerated in the second quarter of 2010. The month of June was one of the major drivers. It was above all the strong net sales caused by the high level of incoming orders and an improved product mix as well as our significantly higher plant capacity utilization that led to a rise in earnings. Savings initiated last year and the efficiency programs also played a role. In addition, the expanding after-sales services business demonstrated its positive effect," explained Hans-Georg Frey, Chairman of the Board of Management. Operative earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased to 25.7 million euros in the second quarter of 2010 (prior year: -12.0 million euros). Cumulative earnings improved to 37.7 million euros in the first half of 2010 (prior year: -14.8 million euros). The corresponding return on sales was 4.5 per cent by the middle of the year (prior year: -1.8 per cent).
Net income advanced to 16.5 million euros in the second quarter of 2010 (prior year: -12.0 million euros). On a cumulative basis, net income amounted to 24.8 million euros (prior year: -15.6 million euros). This results in 0.76 euros in earnings per preferred share for the first half of 2010 (prior year: -0.43 euros).
In view of the market's dynamic development in the first six months, Jungheinrich expects the world market to expand by over 30 per cent to significantly more than 700 thousand trucks in 2010. "In the second half of 2010, our company's business performance will continue to be characterized by consolidation, growth and earnings improvements. Demand growth in new truck business as well as plant capacity utilization and the associated contribution to earnings will be of decisive importance in this respect," says Hans-Georg Frey. Based on the revitalization of demand witnessed since the beginning of the year and the further improvement in framework conditions, Jungheinrich is raising its forecast, anticipating that incoming orders will rise to about 1.8 billion euros and that consolidated net sales will advance to approximately 1.75 billion euros. Building on this and taking account of progress made in consolidation, the Jungheinrich Group will generate operative earnings of between 60 and 80 million euros in 2010. 02.09.2010 P&G Announces Plan to Use Innovative Sustainable Packaging
(
Company news
)
The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE: PG) announced plans to use renewable, sustainable, sugarcane-derived plastic on selected packaging on its Pantene Pro-V(R), COVERGIRL(R) and Max Factor(R) brands.
Sugarcane-derived plastic is a significant development in sustainable packaging because it is made from a renewable resource, unlike traditional plastic, which is made from non-renewable petroleum. The new material is made in an innovative process which transforms sugarcane into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, a type commonly used for product packaging. It remains 100% recyclable in existing municipal recycling facilities.
"P&G's commitment to use renewable bio-derived plastic in its global beauty and grooming product packaging is an important step forward in its efforts to improve the environmental profile of its products," said Dr. Jason Clay, Senior Vice President of Market Transformation of World Wildlife Fund, U.S. "We applaud this announcement as part of their leadership in finding innovative solutions to the sustainability challenges facing the world today."
By launching this renewable packaging on some of its global beauty brands, P&G will leverage its scale to deliver meaningful environmental improvements. P&G will source the sugarcane-derived plastic from Braskem SA, who manufactures the material using ethanol made from sustainably-grown Brazilian sugarcane. The pilot will be rolled out globally over the next 2 years, with the first products expected to be on shelf in 2011.
''This innovation is truly consumer-driven. As we talk with women around the world, they tell us that they want to make themselves more beautiful without making their environment less beautiful,'' said Gina Drosos, Group President, Global P&G Beauty. ''With this new packaging innovation, women can have confidence that their favorite brands are helping to make a difference.''
"Using sugarcane-derived plastic represents another step in P&G's commitment to environmental sustainability and the development of sustainable innovation products," said Len Sauers , P&G Vice President, Global Sustainability. "P&G is making significant progress in environmental sustainability through our work with external partners. Together, we are working on creative solutions that deliver science-based sustainable innovations." (Procter & Gamble Paper Products Co)

01.09.2010 Fachpack 2010 in Nuremberg: Marbach Group – Economy meets Ecology
(
Company news
)
The Karl Marbach GmbH & Co. KG will be presenting their latest highlights at Fachpack in Nuremberg from September 28-30th 2010.
The first ecological dieboard, the Marbach greenplate, will be celebrating its first anniversary at this year’s Fachpack. Having sold more than 10,000 plates since its launch even Marbach is surprised by the success of this green Marbach innovation.
General Sales Manager Silvio Gruber explains: “Of course, we are very happy about the successful launch of the greenplate. Long-term operations have even shown that the greenplate, besides ecological sustainability, also provides some technical advantages for our customers.” What exactly are these advantages he wants to keep secret until Fachpack. “Fachpack visitors will be shown all benefits in hall 7, stand 7-422”, Mr. Gruber indicates with a grin.
This year, Marbach will also be informing the visitors what ecological sustainability means to Marbach in details at the special show “Sustainable production and packaging”. But Marbach does not only put their focus on the development of “green” tools but rather continues their philosophy of sustainability – called marbagreen – purposefully and comprehensively.
Silvio Gruber continues: “The co-operation with Tecnaro GmbH, winner of the European Inventor Award 2010, is another big step forward for us dealing with ecological sustainability!
We are very honored that we will be welcoming the award winner at our special show stand 4-229, hall 4! Let’s just say this: in the future we will not only substitute the wood of the dieboard by eco-friendly material but also other tool components.”
Besides ecologically sustainable products Marbach will of course be presenting further new developments such as the masterstrip-plate. This stripping technology provides a safe and efficient stripping and is now also available for solid board. Furthermore, Marbach will be introducing their latest project, the rotary cutting die marbaspeed-r. The main advantage of this brand-new high-speed rotary die for corrugated board is its enormous power. (Karl Marbach GmbH & Co. KG)

01.09.2010 Tembec Fully Supports Proposed Ontario Energy Program: Resulting Energy, Environmental and...
(
Company news
)
...Economic Benefits a Great Combination
Tembec indicated its full support for an energy conservation program announced earlier today by Ontario Energy and Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid. The Company believes this program will encourage energy management practices that will have both a positive environmental impact and a positive impact on the competitiveness of several key Ontario industries.
The initiative will create a policy that rewards investments in efficiency and demand management and recognizes energy efficient practices by large industrial users. It will essentially bring the concept and benefits of time of use power currently available to residential users to industrial consumers.
“This program will result in energy, environmental and economic benefits—a great combination. By encouraging a shift away from peak demand periods, both the need for and use of peaking plants will be lessened, resulting in a reduced reliance on fossil fueled facilities,” said Jim Lopez, Tembec’s President and CEO. “With an industrial time of use framework available, the average cost of power, a critical cost element for many industries, will be lower. This will result in improved competitiveness and greater potential for job security.”
“This initiative comes at a critical time for the Ontario economy generally and the Northern Ontario economy in particular. Tembec fully supports this initiative,” concluded Mr. Lopez. (Tembec Inc.)

31.08.2010 Metre-by-metre art on Hahnemühle water-colour paper
(
Company news

Susanne Haun paints on the Veneto reel
Portraits, birds, flowers, skulls, mountains, fishes, angels... and all that in one picture. That's what Berlin's artist Susanne Haun currently is painting in a continuous work of art. The water-colour paper reel Veneto features a length of 10 metres long and a width of 40 centimetres. The detailed drawings are created with drawing ink and a quill while the shadows are painted - with water and brush - in watercolours. The picture with its length of several metres could be called ‘Work in Progress' as Susanne Haun keeps on working on it whenever she feels like doing so. And she reports about the progress of her work and the inspiration for the respective subjects in her blog in the World Wide Web. Just visit the blog from time to time and take a look at the ‘Online-Zeichen-Protokoll'. In mid-July, the huge picture celebrated its hump day, with five metres of the 10-metre reel being completed. 30.08.2010 Four new wind turbines in the US
(
Company news
)
SCA has significantly advanced its commitment to green alternative energy with the installation of four wind turbines at its Service Excellence Center (SEC) in Menasha / Neenah, Wisconsin, USA. The official start-up of the turbines was marked with a community event and dedication ceremony on July 21.
(At the community celebration the public had the chance to learn more about alternative energy, environmental awareness and conservation. “Our new wind turbines stand as a symbol of SCA’s commitment to sustainability and our environmentally friendly products,” Don Lewis, President of SCA Tissue North America, told the assembled dignitaries and attendees.
- 100 to 125 megawatt-hours per year
Footings for the 30-meter towers were placed in early December 2009. The towers were tipped into place during the week of June 14, 2010. The four 20-kilowatt turbines are now adding to the electricity supply for the SEC building.
“Each turbine has three 15-foot blades. Together, the four turbines will produce 100 to 125 megawatt-hours per year, enough electricity to power 10 to 12 homes each year,” says Mike Dillon, manager for SCA’s tissue operations, environmental and risk management.
In recent years, the SEC has served as a learning laboratory for SCA in exploring environmental and alternative energy initiatives: SCA installed 115 solar panels (2008), partnered up with McMahon Engineer Architects to begin a prairie grass restoration project (2008) and kicked off a storm water filtration project (2009).
- SCA supports green jobs
SCA supports green jobs, starting with the employees who manufacture its 100-percent recycled Tork® products. SCA and the United Steelworkers have established a strong and collaborative working relationship which provides a critical foundation for the success of its day-to-day manufacturing operations.
The wind turbine project is an example of the green jobs that are evolving in the Fox Valley.
“The major participants in this effort are local,” Dillon pointed out. “The turbines are the first commercial units built by a new Oshkosh company called Renewegy, LLC. Faith Technologies in Menasha is doing the electrical work, and the foundation work for the towers was done by our neighbour, Miron Construction.”
- Eligible for energy performance grant
With the turbines now operating, SCA becomes eligible to receive a U.S. Department of Energy performance grant that could pay for up to a third of the project’s USD 280,000 cost. “Based on the projected electricity from the turbines and on SCA continuing to meet its energy conservation goals, the wind turbine project will have a payback period of seven years or less,” says Dillon. Photo: Heiko Kienast reading the control wedge with a standard measuring device. He then validates the color accuracy using the CA Control Tool. "The role of the DigitalPrint Expert fits our CA strategy perfectly, which is aligned with increasing quality and production reliability," he says. "On one hand it contributes to much faster certification of prints created using our CA-media by Fogra. On the other, it is a further stepping stone towards the creation of internationally valid standards for large format digital printing."
Color Alliance (CA) acquires large-format digital printing expertise certified by Fogra after CA employee Heiko Kienast completes DigitalPrint Expert (DPE) course with Fogra in Munich. Members of the Color Alliance, a partnership of leading international RIP and printing media manufacturers, are now able to receive Fogra certification much faster.
After passing a written and practical test, DigitalPrint Experts are capable of configuring and validating inkjet systems in accordance with the guidelines of the current ISO Standard (ISO/CD 12647-8 'Validation Print'). They can assist end users in preparing for and carrying out the FograCert Validation Print Creation (VPC) and request certification from Fogra.
The Color Alliance is therefore able to conduct the preliminary testing required for Fogra certification of a new CA-print medium independently. Thanks to the Fogra training received by Heiko Kienast, CA now has the necessary know-how available in-house. The overall testing procedure is much quicker and more cost-efficient for CA.
"The role of the DigitalPrint Expert fits our CA strategy perfectly, which is aligned with increasing quality and production reliability," says Heiko Kienast. "On one hand it contributes to much faster certification of prints created using our CA-media by Fogra. On the other, it is a further stepping stone towards the creation of internationally valid standards for large format digital printing."
- The Fogra DigitalPrint Expert
Certification of DigitalPrint Experts expands the modular FograCert testing program for digital printing. This focuses on the qualification of users and manufacturers with respect to ISO 12647-8 in the area of digital printing and the necessary principles of color communication (color measurement and quality assurance) as well as hybrid data preparation.
By standardizing the print media (uniform CA coating) Color Alliance has long since been driving forward the development of an international standard. This aims to enable print service providers to receive process reliability for large format printing (LFP) anywhere in the world. The Color Alliance has been working closely with Fogra since the beginning of the year to define and then make available to print service providers the corresponding universal parameters for this. In addition, the Color Alliance has been a member of the Fogra Technology Research Association since the middle of the year. (Color Alliance) |

27.08.2010 Finnish forest industry in January-June 2010: Production volumes approach pre-recession levels
(
Company news
)
Some 5.8 million tonnes of paper as well as 3.4 million tonnes of pulp and almost 5 million cubic metres of sawn timber were produced in Finland in January-June. Production growth picked up speed in tandem with strengthening demand.
“The Finnish forest industry has improved its competitiveness and profitability as well as strengthened its position in the recovering markets. The effects of the extensive structural change are beginning to show and competitive mills have been able to increase their production volumes as demand has risen. A livelier timber market and increased electricity consumption are both indicators of how production is growing,” says Timo Jaatinen, Director General of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.
"The economy is recovering and things are looking up for the industry, but the effort to improve the domestic operating environment and profitability must continue. At the moment, energy and raw materials cost pressures in particular are significant causes of concern.”
“The forest industry's energy and fuel tax bill threatens to increase by over €90 million in just a couple of years if the tax hikes, which were proposed by the Ministry of Finance, are introduced into next year's State budget unamended,” Timo Jaatinen points out. Finnish energy taxes are already substantially heavier than those of other countries and the planned hikes would increase this burden substantially.
According to the Finnish Forest Industries Federation's advance data the value of the forest industry production was over €9.5 billion in January-June. €3 billion of this was generated by the wood products industry and €6.5 billion by the pulp and paper industry.
In addition to the increased production volumes, strengthening demand has boosted pulp and sawn timber prices. This has contributed to the rise in the value of production. The value of second-quarter production is forecast to have risen to some €5.2b, which is 50% more than in the corresponding period of 2009.
The forest industry has driven Finnish exports into robust growth territory during the early part of the year. The value of forest industry exports (furniture included) in May increased by 35% from 2009. The total value of Jan-Jun forest industry exports was €4.1 billion, which is 18% more than in the corresponding period of 2009. Forest industry products accounted for 22% of overall goods exports.

26.08.2010 For optimum precision and more
(
Company news
)
The OPTIMA MFL portioning system offers a series of functioning variants, which, under certain conditions, allow optimization of the dosing results for powdery and chunky products. Our illustration shows a two-lane version with a combination option of the dosing devices.
The first variant features two-phase dosing by the auger filler SD-V. In the first phase, the checkweighers (CS-V) determine how much product will have to be added in the second dosing phase (auger filler SD-N). Then, the downstream gross weighers (CS-B) check the total weight – following the programmed second-phase filling. A mean value control optimizes the pre and post filling. This system offers optimum precision with very good output.
The second variant combines the volume dosers VD with the gross weigher CS-B. This option is best suitable for chunky products. The mean value regulation concerns the dosing volumes.
The third variant integrates auger filling with volume filling. In this version, a product and/or a product mix is combined and dosed together with a second, usually very sensitive product. Examples for this application are mushroom sauce or salad dressings with onion pieces. First-phase of the product dosing is made by the auger filler (SD-V). Subsequently, product B is added by the volume dosers (VD) before the first-phase checkweighers (CS-V) determine the preliminary weight for the programmed following product addition. The auger fillers (SD-N) subsequently add product A. Gross weight checkweighers (CS-B) determine the total weight. The mean value control is applied to the results of the auger filler, or, optionally, of the volume dosers. (OPTIMA packaging group GmbH)

26.08.2010 Clariant showcases expertise in coloration, whiteness and functional chemicals at China Paper 2010
(
Company news
)
Cartabond®, Cartafluor®, Cartasol® M range and white paper solutions are focus at the China Paper 2010 exhibition in Shanghai, China
Under the banner of “Creating Value in a world of paper”, global specialty chemicals company Clariant will attend the China Paper exhibition in Shanghai from September 15 – 17 at the Intex at Shanghai, China. As an established leader in providing high quality solutions for the paper industry across the world, Clariant will showcase its expertise in the area of coloration, whiteness, surface & coating, as well as processing chemicals during the 3-day show.
Cartabond® series crosslinkers for improved quality in offset printing and converting
The series provides crosslinkers for improved quality in offset printing and converting. During printing and converting operations such as sheeting, rolling and de-curling, free particles tend to form dust, causing production stoppages and reduced printing quality. This is especially true when the paper surface needs to be wetted out for printing or converting operations.
Cartabond crosslinkers offer improved wet surface strength by decreasing the water solubility and/or aqueous swelling of binders and fibers close to the paper surface. They create additional links between the binder polymer molecules, the cellulosic fibers and the filler or surface pigment particles. Cartabond crosslinkers are highly reactive. They quickly crosslink as soon as water is evaporated from the paper surface in the drying section of the paper machine. Cartabond TSI, Cartabond EPI, Cartabond MZI and Cartabond KZI are available depending on the specific paper type and printing application.
Cartafluor® CFI liquid – Oil & grease resistance for food packaging
Cartafluor CFI is a highly efficient cationic fluoropolymer providing grease and oil-resistance for paper and board. Additionally a degree of water resistance is also achieved via the sizing effect. The product functions by absorbing onto individual fibers, imparting a low surface energy to the substrate and is designed for the treatment of sized and unsized paper. Due to its performance and ecological properties it provides considerable benefits in the high-end industries such as food packaging.
Main characteristics and advantages of Cartafluor CFI liquid:
• Cationic, high molecular weight fluoropolymer
• Providing grease, oil and water resistance to paper and board
• Versatile product: application in wet-end or size press
• Food contact approval from FDA and BfR
Cartasol® M range – coloration for packaging & newsprint
Another group of products to be featured at China Paper 2010 is the Cartasol M range. They have been developed especially for the packaging and newsprint market and combine superior technical performance with an improved Health and Safety profile at a competitive cost.
Cartasol M products are ideally suited for the dyeing of papers based on mechanical, recycled and unbleached pulp. They have been developed specifically for packaging applications as a technically advanced alternative for basic and anionic direct dyes. Compared to basic dyes, Cartasol M products offer a faster attainment of shade and a higher stability with significantly higher light fastness. This product range is available in Yellow, Orange, Brown and Black to suit the varying needs in the packaging and board industry.
Tailored white paper solutions
When it comes to tinting white papers one single solution may not always be applicable. Recognizing this limitation, Clariant offers creative, easy-to-control tinting solutions, tailored for specific mills’ needs, making it versatile enough to produce the desired white grades. This is achieved by offering a full line of specialty dyestuffs, pigment dispersions and specialty optical brightening agents for coated and uncoated free sheet as well as lignin containing grades.
“With strong expertise in tinting and the full range product portfolio, Clariant can provide the paper sector with tailor-made and easy-to-control white paper solutions. We can support customers’ selection of the right combination of optical brightening agent and tinting dyes or pigments to meet their requirements regarding whiteness level and their process conditions,” says Andy Walti, Head of BU Paper Specialties, Region Asia Pacific.
“With this optimized combination resulting from strong partnerships with our customers, papermakers can reduce the consumption of OBA and related costs significantly,” continues Walti.
Clariant offers customized recipes for an improved whiteness depending on the customer’s requirements:
• Brightness
• Whiteness

25.08.2010 Appleton Paper: Nation’s Largest Maker of Thermal Receipt Paper Does Not Use BPA
(
Company news
)
Appleton removed controversial chemical from its thermal paper formulation in 2006
Appleton, the nation’s largest manufacturer of thermal paper – the type often used in cash register and credit card receipts, does not use the controversial ingredient bisphenol A (BPA). This reminder of a readily available, cost-effective and BPA-free alternative comes on the heels of an independent report issued by the Environmental Working Group, which found high levels of BPA in 40 percent of receipts sampled from major U.S. businesses and services.
Appleton dropped BPA from its thermal paper formulation in 2006 out of growing concerns about the safety of the chemical.
“After reviewing toxicology reports and available studies we concluded removing BPA from our thermal products was the responsible thing to do,” said Kent Willetts, Appleton’s vice president of strategic development. “We are committed to actively managing the safety of all our products.”
In Jan. 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that recent studies provide reasons for concern about the potential adverse health effects of BPA in infants and children, especially for applications with direct contact to food. BPA bans are in place in Japan, Canada and a growing number of U.S. states, and Congress is considering a federal ban on BPA in all food and beverage containers.
Today, Appleton representatives participate in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s partnership program Design for the Environment, which involves multi-stakeholder alternative assessments to help reduce environmental releases of, and subsequent exposure to, BPA. The first assessment focuses on finding safer alternatives to BPA for use as a developer for dyes in thermal paper. (Appleton Papers Inc.)

24.08.2010 GOULD PAPER CORPORATION FORMS NEW DIVISION
(
Company news
)
Harry E. Gould, Jr., President of Gould Paper Corporation, New York City, announced the establishment of a new division that will focus on specialty papers and materials. Establishing this division coincides with the recent acquisition of 51% of Gould by Japan Pulp and Paper (JPP). The sales of the combined JPP and Gould entity are now in excess of $5 Billion.
Mr. Gould stated, “With the sale of 51% of Gould to JPP, Gould now has increased sources of supply and additional sales offices throughout the world. With the stagnant commodity paper markets, expansion into specialty papers and materials is a logical and integral part of our long term growth strategy in the United States and abroad.”
Meyer M. Weiss will head this new division as Senior Vice President, Gould Specialty Papers and Materials. Mr. Weiss, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, currently resides in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he served for many years on their prestigious Industry Advisory Group. Mr. Weiss has spent most of his career in the field of specialty papers and materials with such well known companies as Oji Paper Company, Kanzaki Specialty Papers, Tyco and Avery Dennison. Immediately prior to joining Gould, Mr. Weiss was Vice President Digital Imaging for InteliCoat Technologies.
Mr. Gould further stated, “Mr. Weiss is a very knowledgeable and respected participant in the specialty papers field. He brings to Gould a well founded knowledge of specialty papers, its technology, markets and manufacturers. Meyer is a welcome addition to the Gould team where he will be reporting to Bob Weill, President Gould International.” (Gould Paper Corp.)

24.08.2010 Metsä Tissue concludes statutory negotiations in Finland
(
Company news
)
On August 19th, Metsä Tissue Corporation concluded statutory negotiations addressing options for strengthening, securing and improving the profitability of the company's Baking & Cooking business.
“We have agreed that production of Baking & Cooking paper at the Mänttä mill will be partially relocated and all converting will be transferred wholly to Düren in Germany. Production of greaseproof paper will continue on PM7 at the Mänttä facility, but the older machine, PM5, will be shut down. All other mill operations will be streamlined and downscaled to match lower production volumes,” says Metsä Tissue's CEO, Hannu Kottonen. “The Finnish government's recently announced plans to amend waste taxation and increase energy taxes and the foreseeable cost impact of these actions had no influence on our negotiations,” Kottonen states.
The negotiations concerned personnel at Metsä Tissue's Mänttä mill and personnel in the Baking & Cooking business, affecting roughly 500 employees in total. The maximum headcount reduction originally foreseen by the company was approximately 150 employees. The now-finalised negotiations will result in a headcount reduction of a maximum of 117 employees, 96 of whom are blue-collar and 21 white-collar employees. Their contracts will end between March and August next year.
Metsä Tissue has agreed to support the financial stability and re-employment prospects of terminated employees by providing a voluntary severance package.
Last June Metsä Tissue Corporation signed a Memorandum of Understanding to buy a specialty paper machine (PM5), related equipment and power plant at M-real Corporation's Reflex mill located in Düren, Germany. With statutory negotiations now completed, Metsä Tissue intends to continue negotiations with M-real in order to finalise the deal. (Metsä Tissue Corp.)
