A sheet of paper or parchment or a page of a book is called a "Blatt" (leaf) already in Old High German. For newspapers, the word "Blatt" became common around 1750, it represents a shortening from Intelligenzblatt. The Blätterwald (forest of leaves) is a jokingly ironic term for the totality of all newspapers, whereby the individual newspapers (leaves) are seen in analogy to the foliage of the forest.
