Marsna Paper B.V. purchases buildings and grounds Meerssen Papier from local government  (Company news)

On Monday 24 September, Rolf Pijsel, director / owner of Marsna Paper B.V, purchased the buildings and grounds from Meerssen Papier from the local government of Limburg. Meerssen Papier B.V. was bought in April 2015 from bankruptcy by the Pijsel family (consisting of father Roel Pijsel, son Rolf Pijsel and daughter-in-law Sophie Pluim) and continued under the name Marsna Paper B.V.

Since the relaunch in April 2015 the new management (with the help and great dedication, enthusiasm and expertise of 38 employees) has succeeded in closing 2015, 2016 & 2017 with a profit and offering strong prospects for a successful future. The company, which produces graphic paper specialties (including artfully crafted watermark paper and paper for luxury packaging), is celebrating its 180th anniversary and currently employs 50 people.

The buildings and land were owned by the local government from 2009 and were leased to the owners until September 2018. Binding agreements have been made as part of the sale of the property to ensure that the buildings will be upgraded to meet the current fire and safety requirements. This will require a renovation investment of over € 10 million, with the local government contributing € 3.68 million and the new owner Marsna Paper B.V. € 7 million.

Originally, the deed of sale was due to be finalised in summer. However because the local government wanted to obtain more certainty regarding the question of whether this would be perceived as state aid, the sale was postponed. The case was assessed by an external expert on behalf of the local government. This expert has come to the conclusion that the sale of the grounds and buildings for € 1.00 and the contribution of the local government to assist with necessary maintenance costs does not constitute state aid.

It has also been agreed that Marsna Paper B.V. will cooperate with future landscape and nature development where this does not impede its operational management.

With the purchase of the buildings and the grounds from Meerssen Papier, Marsna Paper B.V. can now fully focus on the further expansion of its market position in the global niche of paper specialties and also focus on new products and markets. The Pijsel family also runs Filtropa, a manufacturer of paper coffee filters in Maastricht, which exports its products to many countries in Europe, the United States and the Far East. It is the intention of the new owners that Meerssen Papier will produce the filter paper for Filtropa's coffee filters over time, enabling both companies to work more closely together.
