BillerudKorsnäs sees continued strong market development for the products from the new ...  (Company news)

... board machine, but expects higher investment costs

Updated estimates show that the investment costs for BillerudKorsnäs' new board machine in Gruvön may increase by approximately 20 percent compared to previously announced investment cost of a total of SEK 5.7 billion.

The increase of the investment is mainly due to higher costs for the construction work. The production on the new machine is still expected to start during the first quarter of 2019.

"The cost increase is of course not good, and we have worked very hard throughout the project to keep the budget for the project. Unfortunately, we have had a difficult development on the construction side, which will lead to an increase of the investment. We are still seeing a strong development in the liquid packaging segment and other packaging materials that will be manufactured on the machine. We are convinced that we will be perfectly positioned to satisfy global demand in this market with this investment”, says Christer Simrén (photo), BillerudKorsnäs, Senior Vice President and COO.

BillerudKorsnäs fluting production in Gruvön up and running  (Company news)

As communicated earlier BillerudKorsnäs experienced a major breakdown in the digester in the semi-chemical pulp production line in Gruvön. The problem has now been resolved. The pulp line and the fluting machine PM6 is back in production.

The impact on EBITDA for the breakdown is estimated to approximately SEK 25 million after compensation from insurance.

“The impact of the breakdown could be limited thanks to a very efficient work in the mill, and we could start up production relatively quickly. Now we have to limit the indirect damage in the form of missing deliveries and customer relations,” says Per Lindberg, CEO of BillerudKorsnäs.

Valmet to upgrade evaporator train at BillerudKorsnäs Gruvön pulp & paper mill in Sweden  (Company news)

Picture: Evaporation plant at the BillerudKorsnäs Gruvön pulp and paper mill in Sweden

Valmet will supply an upgrade of the evaporation plant at BillerudKorsnäs Gruvön pulp and paper mill in Sweden. The evaporation plant in a mill concentrates black liquor from the pulp cooking process. The installation of the new equipment is scheduled for spring 2018.

The order was included in Valmet's first quarter 2017 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed. A project of this type and scope is typically valued below EUR 15 million.

In this project, the existing evaporation train will be converted, from using medium-pressure steam as today's heating media, to become essentially low-pressure steam driven. This will optimize the overall steam balance at the Gruvön mill by making medium pressure steam available for the mill's new liquid board machine that will be installed at the mill.

"Valmet delivered the original evaporator train in 2001 and we are happy to cooperate with BillerudKorsnäs Gruvön also for this important plant modification. This upgrade will be beneficial in many ways for Gruvön mill. Besides ensuring medium pressure steam for the new board machine, we are adding washable heating surfaces in order to improve the availability and flexibility of the upgraded evaporation plant," says Thomas Norrgård, Product Sales Manager EVAPS at Valmet.

Details about the delivery
From the evaporation plant the evaporated water is brought back to the pulp process in order to minimize mill's water consumption. After evaporation the concentrated black liquor is fired in the recovery boiler for steam generation and recovery of cooking chemicals.

New equipment to be installed includes a TUBEL evaporator, two Tube Evaporators, two liquor preheaters, and Valmet's patented LP-steam boosting system. A substantial upgrade of the piping system will also be performed as part of the plant upgrade.

BillerudKorsnäs production of semi-chemical pulp supplying PM6 in Gruvön experience breakdown  (Company news)

BillerudKorsnäs experienced a major breakdown in the digester in the semi-chemical pulp production line in Gruvön. The pulp line supplies the fluting machine PM6 with pulp and consequently no fluting from PM6 can currently be produced. The breakdown of the pulp line does not have an impact on the integrated chemical pulp mill, neither does it impact the production of kraft paper, liner or liquid packaging board at the mill.

“At this point in time it is not possible to estimate the financial damage and consequences on customer deliveries, but it will have a significant impact on the current quarter financials. We will return with additional information when we know what the impact will be,” says Per Lindberg, CEO of BillerudKorsnäs.

BillerudKorsnäs makes strategic investment in Gruvön  (Company news)

The board of BillerudKorsnäs has made the decision to carry out the largest investment in the history of the company and one of the largest in Sweden in recent years - the investment in a new board machine at the Gruvön site. The decision has been made in view of growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions for food and beverages globally.

The investment of SEK 5.7 billion includes the construction of a new board machine at the Gruvön production site and rebuilds in the existing pulp mill. The board machine will have an annual capacity of 550,000 tonnes of board, making it one of the largest of its kind in the world. The machine will produce liquid packaging board, cartonboard, food service board and liner. The investment project will start immediately and production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2019.

“This is a historical decision for BillerudKorsnäs. The stable market growth in liquid packaging board and other cartonboards, together with our unique expertise in this area, mean that we are perfectly positioned to satisfy global demand. Access to renewable raw materials from sustainably managed forests in the Nordic region was a key factor when evaluating different alternatives,” says Per Lindberg, President and CEO of BillerudKorsnäs.

Smart packaging solutions can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, reduce climate impact and littering, and also increase food safety. Demand for sustainable solutions is growing around the world as increasing numbers of brand owners, food retailers and consumers make conscious choices. As current capacity at BillerudKorsnäs’ production units is not sufficient to meet future demand, the opportunity of new board production at Gruvön has been investigated in detail since 2015.

In addition to growth in liquid packaging board and other cartonboards, today’s decision will result in a streamlining of the production structure within the company. Current paper production at Gruvön will gradually be transferred to other plants within the company during ramp up of the new board machine, with the aim of offering customers fully satisfactory alternatives. Gruvön’s production of high quality fluting will not be affected by the investment.

Pöyry awarded two engineering services assignments for BillerudKorsnäs, Sweden  (Company news)

BillerudKorsnäs has awarded Pöyry with two engineering services assignments in Sweden. One for a new board machine project in their production site in Gruvön; and the other for the machine glazed (MG) paper machine relocation project from Tervasaari in Finland to Skärblacka in Sweden.

BillerudKorsnäs is a leading supplier of renewable fibre-based packaging materials and solutions, and one of the world leaders in liquid packaging board and other virgin fibre cartonboard. Driven by global megatrends, the demand for these types of board is increasing. BillerudKorsnäs is investigating the possibility of installing a new board machine at the production unit in Gruvön. The machine would become one of the most cost efficient in the world with a capacity of approximately 500 000 t/a of liquid packaging board, cartonboard, food service board and white kraftliner. Pöyry has been awarded pre-project engineering services to develop the investment plan into a viable technical concept.

Simultaneously, BillerudKorsnäs is launching a separate investigation into potential further structural change and growth in specific kraft paper segments. The investigation includes exploring the possibility of moving and integrating the MG paper machine in Tervasaari, Finland, to pulp production at Skärblacka, Sweden. The investigation will also look at investment in further value adding surface treatment capacity at the existing MG paper production in Skärblacka. If implemented, the investments would strengthen Skärblacka's position as one of the world's most efficient production units for white MG papers while also opening up opportunities in attractive market segments within medical papers, food packaging and release liners. Pöyry's assignment covers pre-project engineering services for the machine relocation.

"These projects are evidence of our successful operation model where global competence and local presence are combined. We are executing this project with experts from Sweden and Finland to ensure the best result for the client. We are proud to be the selected partner of BillerudKorsnäs with these strategically important development opportunity investigations. These assignments further strengthen Pöyry's position as the world's leading pulp and paper engineering consultancy.", says Johan Ehrnrooth, Pöyry's Vice President, Pulp & Paper Europe.

BillerudKorsnäs investigates opportunities for growth  (Company news)

The demand for sustainable packaging solutions is growing globally. BillerudKorsnäs wants to explore the opportunities to respond to the demand growth while at the same time streamline and further improve its production structure. The company is now launching two feasibility studies, one regarding investment into a new board machine at the production site in Gruvön (photo), Sweden, and the other regarding a streamlining and development of the production structure for packaging papers.

BillerudKorsnäs is a leading supplier of renewable fiber based packaging materials and solutions. Within liquid packaging board and other virgin fiber cartonboard, the company is one of the world leaders. Driven by global megatrends, the demand for these types of board is increasing. BillerudKorsnäs therefore wants to investigate the possibility of installing a new board machine at the production unit in Gruvön. The investigation is a part of BillerudKorsnäs strategy for volume growth within business area Consumer Board. It is also in line with the strategies for the business areas Containerboard and Packaging Paper. The machine would become one of the most cost efficient in the world with a capacity of approximately 500 000 t/a of liquid packaging board, cartonboard, food service board and white kraftliner. In addition to growth in attractive board segments, an investment decision would also include a streamlining of the production structure within the business area Packaging Paper as the current production of kraft papers at the Gruvön production unit would be discontinued and replaced by production at other BillerudKorsnäs units. A potential investment decision can be made at the earliest during 2016.

Simultaneously, BillerudKorsnäs is launching an investigation into the possibilities of further structural change and growth in selected attractive kraft paper segments. The investigation includes exploring the possibility of moving the MG paper machine in Finnish Tervasaari, unintegrated to pulp production, to Swedish Skärblacka, which is an integrated unit. The investigation also includes investment in further value adding surface treatment capacity at existing MG paper production in Skärblacka. If implemented, the investments would strengthen Skärblacka’s position as one of the world's most efficient production units for white MG papers while also opening up opportunities in attractive market segments within medical papers, food packaging and release liners. The investigation will be completed during the first half of 2016 and after a potential decision is taken about a year is required to carry out the investment in surface treatment capacity and one and a half years for a potential paper machine move.

“These two investigations clearly indicate that we have our sights set on growth. We carefully compare all different growth scenarios to each other. Right now, we consider conditions for organic, investment driven, growth in our own production structure as the most favorable. These investigations do not exclude the possibility of further acquisitions”, says Per Lindberg, President and CEO, BillerudKorsnäs.

CEO Per Lindberg (photo) comments on the development during Q2 2014:
“We deliver a strong and stable result for the second quarter. Our adjusted operating profit reached SEK 467 million and our operating margin was 9%. Overall, I am pleased with our financial performance. The market place has been quite good with solid demand and stable prices within all business areas. Business area Packaging Paper has managed to keep the prices stable during the quarter in spite of increased capacity on the market, and has increased prices on new orders within the sack segments thanks to a seasonally strong demand. Within business area Consumer Board we have launched the next generation of Cartonboard products on the market, which has been very well received by customers. Business area Containerboard has delivered a stable result for the second quarter but is beginning to feel a real pressure from the increased capacity on the market.

We continue with our ambition “Challenging conventional packaging for a sustainable future” with the aim of increasing the level of innovation and leadership. During the quarter we have received confirmation in several areas that we are right on target with our mission. Several countries are putting regulations in place for reducing the use of plastics in packaging. We offer sustainable alternatives to several plastic applications, and sustainability is our top priority. We have received recognition from both EcoVadis and "oekom research", meaning that the company is acknowledged for its sustainability work. During the quarter, we have also made a decision to further improve the environmental profile of the company through a major investment in Gävle. Following our ambition to increase innovation and product leadership, we have during the quarter decided to invest in next generation fluting at Gruvön, enhancing both product performance as well as machine capacity. On the more innovative side, BillerudKorsnäs and Berghs School of Communication are giving Spotify a physical form. It is this year’s edition of a packaging design contest for students at Berghs and this is the first time an online brand will be physically packaged.

During the first half of 2014 we have delivered an operating margin of 10%, and a growth in sales volumes over last year with 4%, in line with our profitable growth targets and our long term strategy. The integration work has progressed as planned and as already communicated, the realisation of synergies is happening faster than first planned. All employees have done a fantastic work all across the company, in numerous different projects that constitutes the integration program. However, the pace of integration in combination with synergy-related incentives will increase the non-recurring costs for realising the synergies with approximately SEK 25 million for the year. It is my belief that this is money well spent.’’

A stable fourth quarter 2013 for BillerudKorsnäs impacted by unexpected production problems  (Company news)

Picture: Per Lindberg, President & CEO

BillerudKorsnäs fourth quarter results are stable, but negatively impacted by unexpected production problems. The problems have primarily included two longer unplanned stops at the Frövi mill and a quality related problem in Gruvön, with a total impact on the results of approximately SEK 70 million. Operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2013 will amount to approximately SEK 195 million. Non-recurring integration costs are estimated to approximately SEK 30 million and the operating profit adjusted for integration costs is estimated to approximately SEK 225 million.
"Production at the end of the year has not really gone our way. We have suffered from some unusual incidents, and it is without doubt exceptional that these problems could occur during the same quarter. Production is now in full swing again and we are completely comfortable with the actions taken. These issues do not affect our view of the future as the underlying business is stable. We are building a company to deliver value to customers and shareholders for a long time to come”, says Per Lindberg, President & CEO.
Toward the end of the fourth quarter, the company has had longer stops in Frövi on two occasions caused by defects in steam generation and distribution. The repairs were extensive and complex resulting in further loss of time and thus production. The negative impact on operating profit is expected to amount to approximately SEK 40 million.
Also, during the end of quarter a quality problem was detected at Gruvön. The problem is solved by preventive measures in the process by investments and improved quality procedures. The negative impact on operating profit is expected to amount to approximately SEK 30 million.

Strike shuts down all production at Billerud’s Gruvön paper mill  (Company news)

The Swedish Paper Workers Union has during the weekend turned down the mediators’ offer and is consequently deciding to go through with its expanded notice, which for Billerud means total work stoppage at Billerud’s Gruvön paper mill that will come into effect as of Monday 18.00 CET.
The loss of production from Gruvön’s paper mill is expected to affect Billerud’s earnings by approximately SEK 4 million per day exclusive of compensation from the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise’s strike fund (Sw. konfliktfond).
Billerud’s paper mill in Skärblacka has been at a standstill since 16 April due to the Swedish Paper Workers Union’s strike. The total cost to Billerud of these two mills with production stoppages amounts to approximately SEK 7 million per day exclusive of compensation from the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise’s strike fund.
The Confederation of Swedish Enterprise has pledged that full compensation from strike funds will be paid to members affected by this industrial action.
“This conflict feels totally unnecessary and is a tragedy for everyone who works in the Swedish paper industry. We apologise to our customers for the damages we are causing them and hope that those responsible for these damages will come to their senses as soon as possible so that we can start deliveries again,” says Billerud’s President and CEO, Per Lindberg.
