HERMA: Better composting without compromise

- The new 62E adhesive makes it easy to produce labels that combine assured compostability with excellent migration values.

- Thanks to the 62E and 62N adhesives, a total of four HERMA adhesive laminates for labels now bear the so-called Keimling mark for certification in accordance with EN 13432.

With the new HERMA 62E pressure-sensitive adhesive, it is very easy to create labels that combine guaranteed compostability with excellent migration values - for example, for labelling fruit.

The compostability of labels is more in demand than ever and is now technically easily solvable. However, HERMA has also succeeded in combining compostability with other sought-after properties. The new adhesive 62E not only composts excellently, it is also particularly low-migration. It is approved for dry, moist and fatty foods (correction factor 2). Because it also achieves good, high adhesion values on rough, uneven surfaces, the 62E is ideally suited for labelling fruit, for example. At the same time, labels made from the appropriate adhesive material can help to make entire packages, such as those made of paper or cardboard, completely compostable. The low application weight of the 62E also ensures reliable processes and problem-free further processing. In combination with two defined label materials, the 62E - like the compostable HERMA 62N pressure-sensitive adhesive - is allowed to carry the Keimling logo according to EN 13432. This standard is an internationally recognised proof of the industrial compostability of biodegradable products. The label materials certified with both pressure-sensitive adhesives are HERMAextracoat (grade 242) and HERMAtherm Bio phenol-free (grade 909). HERMAextracoat is a white adhesive label paper with a light glossy coating on one side and made from FSC® Mix Credit material. It can be used to produce visually sophisticated, multi-coloured labels in all classic printing processes. Despite its compostability, self-adhesive material produced with it is just as high-quality to print on and just as easy to die-cut as conventional self-adhesive material. HERMAtherm Bio phenol-free (grade 909), on the other hand, is a white thermal paper without protective coatings, i.e. an economy quality. It is ideal for the weighing area of food packaging; EAN codes and other code systems can be displayed very well on it.

The certifications for industrial composting were each carried out by DIN CERTCO. Certification for home composting in accordance with the NF T51-800 standard is also currently underway there, which means that corresponding labels could be disposed of in garden compost. HERMA expects this certification to be completed by the end of 2022.
