Hygiene paper manufacturers warn of supply crisis

Manufacturers of hygiene paper in Germany are warning of the consequences of skyrocketing gas and electricity prices and a possible halt in supplies of Russian gas. An interruption in gas supplies would lead to immediate production stops and a supply crisis in this important, system-relevant product area. This is particularly the case as the industry relies on gas for production. The situation is already threatening the existence of some companies due to the massive increase in energy prices.

The companies organized in the association DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE point to the importance of hygiene papers in medical facilities and in the private and commercial sectors. Here, even under the difficult conditions of the Corona pandemic, manufacturers have ensured supplies and done their utmost to cushion the consequences of the hoarding purchases.

However, the current situation on the energy markets - the price of gas on the spot market was more than ten times higher than a year ago - has already led to temporary shutdowns in some cases, as production is no longer economically viable. A gas supply stoppage would affect the entire German industry and thus also the production of hygiene papers and could lead to supply bottlenecks.
