Mercer Scales Back Production at Rosenthal Pulp Mill
News General news
Mercer International will not produce pulp at its Rosenthal, Germany, facility in September. The company is extending the maintenance shutdown—originally planned for two weeks—to last the entire month.
Mercer Rosenthal employs approximately 400 people and manufactures various wood-based products, including long-fiber pulp, tall oil, and lignin. At the Rosenthal site, Mercer also operates a large biomass cogeneration plant with a thermal capacity of 413 MW and an electrical capacity of 57 MW.
Mercer has not explicitly commented on the reasons for the extended maintenance shutdown in September. However, market conditions for European long-fiber pulp producers are currently considered difficult. High fiber costs and an unfavorable revenue-to-cost ratio are weighing on the industry.
