Xeranthemum annuum is an annual summer flower whose natural distribution area is the Mediterranean region, southern Europe and western Asia. In Germany it is also known under the name of paper flower.

The heat-loving plant is a neophyte in many regions, therefore there are also isolated occurrences in Germany and Switzerland, preferably along fields and roadsides as well as in vineyards.

It is also known as annual immortelle or annual strawflower. Both names refer to the long shelf life of the flowers of the popular dried flower.

In June, the flowering period of the paper flower begins and often lasts until September or even October.The flowers feel like paper, hence the name of the plant.
