The achievement in the prestigious global packaging awards is testament to Smurfit Kappa’s unwavering commitment to designing the most innovative, creative and sustainable solutions for its customers.

Solutions that distinguished themselves in this year’s WorldStar awards include an octagonal cake box, a transportation pack for electric scooters and a striking point-of-sale display for sardines.

The ecommerce category was an area in which Smurfit Kappa shone. One of the products that caught the judges’ eyes in this category was a clever ecommerce pack for plants which keeps the soil and pot separate to prevent spillage and arrive intact.

Smurfit Kappa’s sustainability credentials were evident in each of the 12 winning submissions. A 100% paper-based reel for engineering components, previously made from plastic and metal, eliminated 35 tonnes of plastic annually.

A pack created for the PPG paint multinational was one of the stars of the Household category. The plastic jerry can was replaced with a Bag-in-Box solution which facilitates easier pouring of the paint and led to an 80% plastic reduction.

Commenting on Smurfit Kappa’s success, Arco Berkenbosch, Chief Innovation Officer at Smurfit Kappa, said: “We are thrilled to have come out top at these highly respected and global awards. Over the years, we have built up a collection of over 8000 designs on our Innobook tool which our design teams can draw on for inspiration. This has really helped to foster a culture of creativity and raise the bar internally.

“I’d like to congratulate the talented people across Europe and the Americas that came up with these award-winning solutions. All of them solved a particular problem for the customer in a truly unique way and delivered considerable sustainability benefits.”
