The shipping business is booming. According to Statista, over 159 billion packages were sent worldwide in 2021. By 2027, the volume is expected to reach 256 billion parcels, representing an annual growth rate of 8.5%. The downside of online shopping and free delivery orders: tons of cardboard and paper waste that is not disposed of correctly. Filler materials and adhesive tapes often end up with the waste paper and have to be meticulously separated before recycling processes are even possible. Holistic recyclability can only be achieved by using single-material packaging that dispenses with plastics. This is where tesa comes in with its new product solution tesa® 51344.

tesa® 51344 is a paper-based tear strip for mailing bags and cardboard boxes. The tape's innovative, strong paper backing is coated with an adhesive compound that ensures reliable adhesion even to cartons with a high recycled content. Once the packaging has been disposed of, the tape can be recycled along with the packaging material. tesa is one of the few manufacturers on the market to offer this innovation in its portfolio, providing customers in the corrugated cardboard industry with a more sustainable product that is also suitable for automated production lines.

"With this new product solution, we are offering our customers a fully integrated and more sustainable solution for the production of packaging and shipping cartons. We produce tesa® 51344 without solvents, and the paper used for the backing comes from controlled sources," says Frank Domann, Corporate Marketing Director Industrial Markets at tesa. "Developing products that contribute to sustainability is a strategically important goal for tesa. And we also want to help our customers and partners achieve their sustainability goals. With tesa® 51344, our customers get a more sustainable product for their manufacturing process, while at the same time we improve the life cycle assessment of shipping cartons or mailing bags," adds Domann.

Paper Technology Foundation (PTS) classifies tesa® 51344 as recyclable

The fact that tesa® 51344 is recyclable and can thus be disposed of with the cardboard material is also confirmed by the recyclability test in accordance with PTS-RH 021:2012, a method that determines the content of dissolved, colloidal, and suspended substances in the aqueous phase of the fiber suspension after dissolution using a laboratory scale. In the further development phase, tesa® 51344 also passed several application tests with various types of cardboard and corrugated board with flying colors. The adhesive tape impressed in the tests with its high adhesive strength and reliable opening behavior.
