The skyrocketing electricity prices come at the worst possible time for the graphic arts industry, which is on the road to economic recovery after meager pandemic years in 2020 and 2021. As the leading business association in the communications industry, viscom/p+c has recently introduced its members to more efficient electricity consumption via circulars and appeals, webinars and checklists. For years, members have had access to a team of specialists who provide valuable assistance in implementing measures to limit electricity consumption, promote energy efficiency and underpin the sustainability promoted by the association in the print industry.

In this extraordinary situation on the electricity market, the association will further intensify its existing cooperation with specialists in the field of pooling in electricity purchasing and work to improve the framework conditions for pooling.

Association director Thomas Gsponer expresses his disappointment at the despondent policy of the Federal Council, whose actions are endangering thousands of industrial jobs. He demands that the national government link savings appeals with incentives, thus rewarding companies and private individuals who consume less electricity and generate a high economic benefit through this behavior. The Federal Council is expected to submit to Parliament the legal basis for setting price caps on electricity prices. The profit taxation of energy companies, the majority of which are publicly owned, must be adjusted quickly and the additional tax revenue used for incentives to promote energy efficiency. According to Gsponer, together with European partners, politicians must push for a decoupling of gas and electricity prices and a change in the current pricing model.
