Waste heat from Klingele's paper production becomes bathing fun - sustainable action for the region and resource efficiency

The Friesenbad in Weener is once again using district heating from the Klingele Paper & Packaging Group to heat the pools this year. The waste heat generated during paper production keeps the water at a constant 28 degrees Celsius throughout the season. The annual maintenance work at the Weener site was brought forward for this purpose. The manufacturer of paper and corrugated board packaging is thus making a commitment to the environment and the region that goes beyond the recyclable end product of corrugated board packaging.

The partnership between Klingele and the outdoor pool has now been running for over 20 years and is a win-win situation for around 70,000 bathers a year, the city and the environment. "Our guests appreciate the pleasantly warm water temperatures and the extended season. The fact that Klingele has brought forward the refurbishment work this year and that we can once again make full use of the waste heat from production is a big plus for us as an outdoor pool," says Hermann Welp, Managing Director of Friesenbad.

Self-sufficient energy concept with benefits for customers and site
Klingele has long been committed to energy self-sufficiency: around 88 percent of the energy used for production in the Klingele Group comes from renewable and alternative fuels. The thermal energy that the site in Weener makes available to the outdoor pool comes 80 percent from the exhaust air from the paper machine and the remaining 20 percent from condensed steam. This means that valuable energy is used efficiently instead of being wasted. “By providing the waste heat from our production via the district heating pipeline, we are making a contribution to the region and helping to reduce CO2 emissions,” says Britta Trauernicht, Plant Manager of the paper mill in Weener. “The provision of district heating for the Friesenbad is an example of how we use resources efficiently and at the same time help the outdoor pool to save CO2.”

Responsible use of energy at all sites
The collaboration with the outdoor pool is just one of Klingele's many sustainability initiatives. The French paper mill in Strasbourg, for example, also uses waste heat to provide electricity to the neighboring residential areas.
