Valmet to supply an evaporation plant to Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper mill in Russia  (Company news)

Valmet will supply a new evaporation plant, a combustion plant for gases generated in the production process and related automation systems for Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper mill in Novodvinsk, Russia. The delivery will be part of execution of the second stage of the mill`s priority investment project Reconstruction of Board Production.

The order is included in Valmet's fourth quarter 2016 orders received. The value of an order of this type is typically valued around EUR 40 million.

The delivery will include two new evaporation trains for liquors from kraft pulp cooking and semi-chemical pulp cooking processes, systems for collection, handling and combustion of gases and a new automation system to control the processes. The start-up of the new plant is scheduled for 2019.

"The new evaporation plant construction, as well as other projects within the scope of the priority investment project, will be performed in order to optimize existing technologies and implement best available technologies (BAT) to reduce the formation of pollutants in the process cycle. As a result of long-term close and fruitful cooperation of the two companies' experts, all possible options were considered, and an optimal process concept was developed taking into account specific operating conditions with different liquors, possible difficulties and risks, and allowing flexible and uninterrupted process flow," says Dmitry Zylev, General Director, Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill.

Technical details about the delivery
The new evaporation plant will enable the evaporation of waste red and black liquors based on their formation rate at the maximum capacity of semi-chemical and kraft pulp cooking plants of the board production to provide two board machines with raw material after their reconstruction.

"The combustion plant for gases generated in the production process will completely eliminate the emissions from the new evaporation plant and semi-chemical pulping," says Sami Kervinen, Senior Sales Manager, Energy Sales and Services, EMEA, Valmet.

Valmet to supply an extensive board machine rebuild for Arkhangelsk in Russia  (Company news)

Valmet will supply an extensive board machine and automation rebuild for Arkhangelsk Pulp & Paper Mill (PPM) in Russia. The project for the board machine 2 (BM 2) is a continuation to the pre-engineering project executed by Valmet earlier this year.

The order is included in Valmet's third quarter of 2016 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The value of an order of this type is typically valued around EUR 50-60 million. The rebuild is a part of Arkhangelsk's investment project "Reconstruction of board department" with total value of 8.8 billion rubles (about EUR 125 million).

The delivery will include a new Valmet OptiConcept M board machine wet end, a number of improvements to the drying section, a completely new dry end and a machine control system upgrade. Target of the rebuild is to increase production by 30%. The start-up of the rebuilt machine is scheduled for the second half of 2018.

Technical details of the delivery

Valmet's extensive board machine and automation delivery for the rebuild includes pulpers for broke collection, equipment for approach flow systems for top and back plies, two OptiFlo Fourdrinier headboxes, OptiFormer Multi forming section, OptiPress Linear press section, a start-up package of paper machine clothing, dryer section rebuild, OptiCalender Compact calender, OptiReel reel, automatic transfer rails, OptiWin Drum two-drum compact winder and related air systems. The automation upgrade comprises Valmet IQ quality measurement system, Valmet DNA process control system and a moisturizer. The delivery will also include a semi-automatic reels spool return system and a roll conveying system.

"The customer valued the fact that there is no need for cantilevering beams with OptiConcept M and that there are only minor changes required for the foundations. Space requirement will also be smaller compared to the traditional wet end concepts. The 'plug and play' feature of OptiCalender Compact was also appreciated by the customer," comments Senior Sales Manager Pekka Turtinen from Valmet.

The 7,000 mm wide (wire) BM2 produces fluting and kraftliner grades with a basis weight range of 90 - 200 g/m2. The design speed for the new parts is 1,000 m/min. The annual production will be about 330,000 tonnes.

Valmet to supply recausticizing upgrade to Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper mill in Russia  (Company news)

Valmet will deliver a recausticizing upgrade to Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper mill in Novodvinsk, Russia. The upgrade includes both technology and automation deliveries. Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper is rebuilding the plant to increase capacity and replace obsolete equipment. The start-up of the delivery is scheduled for the fall 2017.

The order was included in Valmet's first quarter 2016 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed. An upgrade with this scope of supply is usually valued below EUR 10 million.

"The project is the second stage of bleached pulp production upgrade in order to increase the capacity. The first stage included the replacement of old drum washers and installation of three Valmet TwinRoll presses was successfully completed in 2015. The goal of the rebuild is to increase white liquor production, which will be followed by installation of an oxygen delignification plant in the future. The obsolete equipment will be replaced as well during the project", says Pavel Smirnov, Deputy Chief Engineer of the Arkhangeslk Mill.

"The rebuild will make possible to increase the capacity of the plant and reduce the considerable maintenance that is required today. The delivery is especially exciting since it is the first time we deliver our new generation lime mud disc filter - OptiDisc. The design will increase work safety and ensure mill runnability", says Thomas Malmqvist, Sales Manager at Valmet.

Technical details about the delivery
The delivery includes technology for the recausticizing plant consisting of cooling, slaking, white liquor filtration and lime mud washing & drying. In addition to main machinery and auxiliary equipment, the order also includes automation instruments related to machinery motors and a DCS process control system. The new design of the lime mud disc filter gives access to bearings and seals from outside the vessel, which makes maintenance easier and improves safety. With the new design the lifetime of the main shaft is doubled.

Der internationale Technologiekonzern ANDRITZ nahm die an JSC Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill (APPM) gelieferte Zellstofflinie im Werk Novodvinsk, Russland, erfolgreich in Betrieb. Die neue Anlage ist mit ANDRITZ-Grünlaugentechnologie für effiziente Kochung, Mahlung und Wäsche des Zellstoffs ausgestattet und erzeugt aus Birken- sowie Espenholz täglich 1.000 Tonnen Halbzellstoff für die Produktion von Wellpappe.

Halbzellstoff wird in einer Kombination aus sanfter Chemikalienvorbehandlung und anschließender mechanischer Behandlung hergestellt, wobei die Fasern aus der Holzmatrix herausgelöst werden: Dieser Verfahrensschritt zur Lignin-Entfernung wird früh unterbrochen, um die Faserausbeute zu steigern und steife Fasern zu erhalten – ein wichtiges Qualitätskriterium bei der Erzeugung von Wellenstoff. Ein wesentlicher Vorteil der ANDRITZ-Grünlaugentechnologie, die vor allem bei Verwendung von Harthölzern eingesetzt wird und die Faserqualität deutlich erhöht, ist die effiziente und unkomplizierte Rückgewinnung der Kochchemikalien in einer angrenzenden Sulfatzellstoffanlage, wodurch eine separate Chemikalienrückgewinnung vollständig entfällt.

Mit der neuen Anlage hat sich die Produktionskapazität von APPM verdoppelt, während die Produktions-kosten und der Abwasseranfall deutlich gesenkt wurden.

Board machine in Archangelsk goes on stream after rebuild by Voith   (Company news)

The Archangelsk Pulp & Paper Mill (APPM), the largest producer of packaging papers in Russia, recently put its BM 1 board machine in Archangelsk back into service following an extensive rebuild by Voith. Voith’s scope of supply included the approach flow system, the headbox and a new top wire. The bottom wire was rebuilt by Voith to meet the new requirements.

The new approach flow system for the top wire consists of IntegraGuard and MultiScreen screens and the associated pumps. The headbox is a MasterJet Pro. The former section was extensively modernized and a new TopFormer F installed to further improve dewatering and quality.

In addition to the machine rebuild, Voith also undertook the basic engineering and supervised commissioning. The rebuild and assembly took just ten weeks and the warranted parameters for the machine were successfully achieved within three months after startup.

Not only did the rebuild of the wet section of the BM 1 improve board quality: following startup of the new semi-chemical pulp mill – and depending on a few other technical measures – the production capacity of the BM 1 will also be increased in the future.

APPM is owned by Pulp Mill Holding GmbH, an Austrian-German Group headquartered in Vienna. The company produces paper, board and corrugated grades in Russia and Ukraine.

ANDRITZ to supply green liquor pulping system for JSC Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill, Russia  (Company news)

International technology Group ANDRITZ has received an order from JSC Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill (APPM) to supply equipment for a new semi-chemical pulp line for APPM’s Novodvinsk mill, Russia. The green liquor cooking and washing technology by ANDRITZ will improve the fiber quality and reduce production cost as well as the effluent charge. Start-up is scheduled for the second quarter of 2014.
The scope of supply comprises the chip washing system, the cooking plant with continuous steam-phase digester, flat disc refiners, washers and screw presses, electrical equipment, as well as instrumentation and control systems. The new plant will use birch and aspen as raw material and produce 1,000 t/d of fluting and testliner pulp grade, thus doubling the current APPM capacity.

Metso to supply new power boiler to Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper mill in Novodinsk, Russia  (Company news)

Metso has signed a contract with Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill to deliver a biomass-fired BFB (bubbling fluidized bed) power boiler including main auxiliary equipment for boiler and site advisory services. This new boiler replaces one of the client’s existing power boilers and further increases mill’s energy independence and cut present electricity costs.
Bark and sludge will be used as fuel in the new boiler which has a capacity of 60MWth. By replacing old coal boilers with new biomass boiler the Arkhangelsk mill will obtain an additional amount of own steam and electricity and Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper mill expect a fast return of investment by reducing electricity costs to more than 216 million rubles a year.
“We are very excited about this project, in which we help our customer to use their mill residuals to produce energy in an efficient and environmentally friendly way,” says Kari Remes, General Manager Sales Capital Sales, Metso.
Start-up of the new biomass boiler is scheduled for the first quarter of 2014. The value of the order is not disclosed, and the order is included in the Energy and Environmental Technology’s Q4 orders received.
