Hamburger Containerboard's planned paper mill in Kütahya will not be built before 2025

In 2017, Prinzhorn's Hamburger Containerboard division announced the construction of a new paper machine and initially left it open as to where the plant would be built.

The options were Spremberg and Kütahya, around 250 km south-east of Istanbul. Relatively quickly, the initial "either-or" became a "both-and". The necessary land in Turkey was acquired and at the same time the plans for Spremberg were finalised.

Hamburger then favoured paper machine 2 in Spremberg and the plant went into operation three years later in 2020.

The company is also sticking to its plans to build a new paper machine at the Kütahya site, but has now told EUWID that no further steps are expected before 2025. The decision to build the PM in Spremberg is not the only reason for this; the current situation on the market for corrugated base paper also needs to improve before new capacities can be considered. In Turkey, Hamburger intends to focus on light testliner and fluting, with a planned capacity of 480,000 tonnes.
