Mondi uses AI to test paper for permeability to flavors and pollutants
News General news
The paper and packaging company Mondi is using AI developed by Graz University of Technology to test how well paper can protect food from flavor loss and pollutants.
Until now, complex tests were necessary for each type of paper to determine the extent and speed at which this occurs. Graz University of Technology therefore investigated how well paper can protect food from flavor loss and contaminants.
A research team led by Karin Zojer from the Institute of Solid State Physics at Graz University of Technology has developed an AI-based prediction system that calculates how permeable different types of paper are to volatile organic substances. This approach could significantly accelerate the development of new packaging materials.
Mondi was a laboratory partner in the implementation and is already using the software to select paper types for specific applications.
