Specialty and high-barrier papers to be the focus at Alfeld site in future
Sappi Europe has concluded the consultation process for the Alfeld paper mill announced in July, which included the decision to shut down two paper machines.
This affects PM 1, PM 4, offline coater 2, and the format equipment, Sappi announced at the end of October. The closures will result in the loss of around 180 jobs. The measures are part of the paper manufacturer's strategy to adjust production capacity to market demand and optimize the use of the remaining facilities at the plant. In the future, the Alfeld plant will focus on specialty and high-barrier papers.
At the Alfeld paper mill, Sappi Europe currently has an annual production capacity of 120,000 tons of sulfite pulp and five paper machines for a total of 275,000 tons of paper and cardboard.
