Schönfelder Papierfabrik is investing in the decarbonization of energy production: To this end, the company inaugurated a new biomass cogeneration plant at its Annaberg-Buchholz site at the beginning of May, which will generate steam and electricity for paper production in future.

With the new power plant, the manufacturer of recycled, packaging and envelope paper is switching from fossil fuel lignite to biomass to generate energy. At the same time, the paper mill is reducing CO2 emissions by around 33,000 tons per year. The additional purchase of certified green electricity will reduce the company's emissions by a total of 93%, writes G+E Getec Holding GmbH, which built the biomass power plant.

The power plant will cover the majority of the energy required during paper production, it continues. Regional waste wood will be used as the energy source.

Schönfelder Papierfabrik produces recycled paper based on 100% waste paper with around 150 employees. In addition to graphic papers, the product portfolio also includes packaging and envelope papers as well as label and wallpaper base papers.
