There are hardly any handed-down treasure maps

A treasure map is a secret site plan or map in which clues are given for finding hidden or buried treasure.

From the Golden Age of Piracy, however, only the Scottish pirate William Kidd (1645-1701), also known as Captain Kidd, is known to have actually hidden a treasure on an island and produced a treasure map for it.

However, the subject has fascinated many people for centuries and has been used in literature and art from ancient times to the present day. The best-known novel with a treasure map as its theme is "Treasure Island" by Robert L. Stevenson.

The motif of the treasure map is also often used in movies, for example "National Treasure", "Dead Mine" or the "Indiana Jones" series.
