UPM closes paper mill in Ettringen
News General news
UPM has completed the consultation process with employee representatives and is ending paper production at the Ettringen paper mill.
In spring 2025, UPM announced plans to permanently close its paper mill in Ettringen, Germany. The company has now confirmed that the consultation process with employee representatives has been completed. The downsizing will affect 189 employees.
Following this closure, production capacity for uncoated mechanical papers will be reduced by 270,000 tons per year. The mill was designed for SC papers, but also produced newsprint. According to a statement by UPM, graphic paper production in Ettringen will cease on December 31, 2025.
An aftercare team will be set up to ensure safe conditions at the factory after the closure.
"The negotiations were conducted as part of a conciliation procedure, which, as a neutral body, helped to facilitate constructive dialogue between employee representatives and the company. We focused on developing socially acceptable solutions for the affected workforce, with the clear intention of mitigating the impact of this closure. Market-oriented severance and pension measures will be implemented and a transfer company will be established," says Eva Kriegbaum, General Manager for UPM paper mills in Germany.
