Nordic Paper Bäckhammar: Three steps to record performance  (Company news)

Valmet’s new innovative solutions have enabled Nordic Paper Bäckhammar go full speed ahead and reach pulp production levels over 800 admt/d (air dry metric ton per day) while also increasing availability, reducing emissions, and reducing maintenance costs.

It has been over five years since Nordic Paper Bäckhammar in Sweden, began its journey to increase the capacity of the cooking plant. The initial production target was 700 admt/d with a future target of 800 admt/d – a level that has now been surpassed.

Three upgrades were made to the cooking plant and Valmet was chosen as the exclusive supplier. In addition to having a very good customer relationship, one of the deciding factors was that Valmet had new products ready for the market for two of the upgrades which allowed Bäckhammar to be the first to install the new technology.

Optimized runnability and reduced emissions
In September 2014, the newly developed Valmet Chip Bin OB (OptiBin) was installed – a product designed to not only optimize runnability, but to also eliminate channeling in the bin which reduces the environmental impact from emissions. Installation was completed during the annual maintenance stop (7 days).

The operation of the new chip bin has been very successful: Chip pre-steaming has improved allowing the Kappa number to be increased, which has reduced wood consumption by almost 3% as a result of the higher yield. Additionally, the mill’s emissions of weak gases have been reduced. The previous equipment accounted for about 50% of these emissions, but the Chip Bin OB has eliminated that portion entirely.

Production was increased from 620 to about 660 admt/d, but other limitations were discovered in the cooking plant. The chip feeding line had reached its maximum capacity, resulting in vibrations throughout the system. The continuous digester was also limited, and modifications were needed to further increase production.

Increased production and Kappa numbers
In 2016, Valmet was commissioned to continue the upgrade of the cooking plant with modifications to the digester. By lowering the digester extraction screens, the retention time in the cooking zone could be increased and allow additional production. Valmet Flexible Screens (OptiFlex) were installed during the annual maintenance stop and the results were outstanding – the production was increased from 660 to 700 admt/d while also increasing the Kappa number from 43 to 48. Bäckhammar now had a digester that could reach the new goals set for the cooking plant.

Removing limitations in chip feeding
With the digester no longer limiting production, a decision was made to address the limitations of the chip feeding line. Valmet presented the newly developed Valmet Pump Feed Solution G3, which converts the conventional chip feeding system into a new modern pump solution and eliminates the High-Pressure Feeder. Bäckhammar accepted, and became the world’s first mill to upgrade a conventional feeding line to this system. The new solution has helped to eliminate vibrations in the feed system and is extremely quiet despite the large chip pump.

Nordic Paper Bäckhammar baut die Online-Schwingungs-Überwachung auf der PM4 weiter aus  (Firmennews)

Der schwedische Spezialpapierhersteller Nordic Paper hat kürzlich seine Online-Schwingungs-Überwachung auf der Papiermaschine PM4 im Werk in Bäckhammar erweitert. Um eine noch höhere Maschinenverfügbarkeit zu erreichen, umfasst das Online-System nun auch die Antriebe mit Installationen bei Motoren und Antriebswellen sowie Lagern und Zahnräder in Getrieben.

Die Überwachungssysteme in Bäckhammar's jüngster Installation umfassen Intellinova Parallel EN, das neueste und leistungsfähigste Online-System der Intellinova-Produktfamilie, und Intellinova Compact. Intellinova Parallel EN verfügt über sechzehn Schwingungsmesskanäle - die alle parallel messen - und bietet umfangreiche Flexibilität für die Konfiguration komplexer Messaufgaben. Intellinova Compact verfügt über acht Schwingungskanäle.

Insgesamt wurden 40 DuoTech Beschleunigungssensoren installiert, die die Schwingungs- und Stoßimpulsmessung im gleichen Sensor mit den patentierten HD-Messtechnologien HD ENV und SPM HD kombinieren. Die HD-Technologien bieten extrem lange Vorwarnzeiten bei sich verschlechternden mechanischen Zustand mit kristallklaren Messergebnissen zur einfachen Problemidentifikation und einer guten Wartungsplanung.

Die Installation wurde im Frühjahr und Sommer durchgeführt. Es wird erwartet, dass das System in Betrieb genommen wird, wenn die PM4 nach einem geplanten Produktionsstopp wieder in Betrieb geht.

Nordic Paper hat Werke in Bäckhammar, Åmotfors und Säffle in Schweden und in Greåker, Norwegen. Das Werk in Bäckhammar - in dem sich auch die Muttergesellschaft befindet - verfügt über eine eigene Zellstofffabrik und zwei Papiermaschinen. Die Zellstofffabrik produziert jährlich rund 200.000 Tonnen ungebleichten Zellstoffs und die beiden Papiermaschinen etwa 130.000 Tonnen ungebleichtes Kraftpapier.

Exclusive signing ceremony at the Governments office  (Company news)

Nordic Paper Holding is changing the ownership as Shanying Paper International is about to acquire the pulp- and paper company. At a signing ceremony at the Governments Offices representatives from both companies met.

CEO Per Bjurbom from Nordic Paper signed the cooperation agreement together with Shanying Paper Internationals Chairman of the board, Wu Mingwu. The ceremony was witnessed by among others Minister of Enterprise and Innovation, Mikael Damberg and Party Secretary of the Zhejiang Province, Che Jun. In addition to these participants there was approximately 40 representatives from China.

We are really looking forward to the new ownership. It´s a long-term industrial owner and that is something that we strongly believe will be good for the company and the employees future. And to be a part of a signing ceremony is obviously something out of the ordinary, says Per Bjurbom.

Shanying is a China based pulp and paper Company and its core business consists of recycled fibre trading, kraft paper manufacturing, packaging, design, printing and logistics. The company is part of the Taison Group and has been listed at the Shanghai Stock Exchange since 2001.

The acquisition of Nordic Paper holding AB makes Shanying one of Chinas biggest paper and packaging manufacturers with global focus. The Group has approximately 9000 employees.

Nordic Paper will remain as an independent European pulp and paper company and there will be no changes regarding the business or the operations at the moment.

LignoCity – a new centre for new green technologies  (Company news)

Innventia, Nordic Paper and Paper Province have started a collaboration to develop the future forest-based bioeconomy. The first step is to establish an open test bed called LignoCity. Here, companies can develop and scale up technology that refines lignin to new climate-friendly fuels, chemicals and materials.

As the world heads towards a bio-based economy, lignin – a by-product of pulp production – is increasingly seen as a raw material with great potential. Lignin could be a green alternative for producing fuels and energy as well as chemicals and lightweight materials. Great efforts are being made to develop processes and to refine different lignin qualities for different applications.

Thanks to a broad newly established collaboration initiated by Innventia, Nordic Paper and Paper Province, several of these initiatives can now be realised. With financial support mainly from VINNOVA, Innventia’s demonstration plant in Bäckhammar will be further developed and made into an open test bed for companies who want to evaluate and validate new refining concepts in the lignin area. The plant is currently the only one in the world that can produce tailor-made lignin qualities in sufficient quantities for upscaling. The purpose of LignoCity is to create a centre where ideas are brought together and opportunities for commercial development are identified and supported. Lignin from kraft pulp production and other sources, for example from ethanol and sugar production, can be processed at the plant. The project involves 18 industrial and public players, including Karlstad University, the municipality of Kristinehamn and Casco Adhesives AB.

“With LignoCity, we are bringing together business models, technological development and infrastructure for research, development and innovation. In the long term, we also hope to be able to extract other components from the black liquor and tackle other process streams,” says Per Tomani, manager for the LignoCity project and the Lignin & Carbon Fibres focus area manager at Innventia.

“It is extremely valuable for the region’s businesses to have access to this type of open test facility, so that we can continue the development of a forest-based bioeconomy,” says Maria Hollander, CEO of Paper Province.

Our goal is to profile ourselves as a municipality with a viable and creative business, where we carry on our technical traditions by creating future innovation. Valmet's new OptiBin innovation in use at Nordic Paper's Bäckhammar pulp mill  (Company news)

Valmet has developed a new chip bin, OptiBin, for pulp mills' digester chip feeding. Its task is to serve as a buffer before the digester and to remove air from the chips in an odorless manner. The new design is the result of years of development aimed at a cost-effective solution with as few moving parts as possible.

The first installation in the world
The first OptiBin was recently started up at the Nordic Paper Bäckhammar pulp and paper mill nearby Kristinehamn, Sweden. In spite of a very tight schedule, the installation and assembly of the new chip bin exceeded expectations at Nordic Paper - everything had to be completed during the regular eight-day mill shutdown.
"The startup was very successful. We started production according to our schedule. What's more, even the startup curve, with a gradual increase in output, followed our plans. A week after the shutdown, we reached full production," says Jonas Lindqvist, Deputy Director of Production and Project Manager at Nordic Paper. "There is still some residual points and, of course, some trimming to ensure that we achieve the goals we have set for the project," he adds.
"For us at Valmet, Bäckhammar was the perfect partner for taking our new development into practice. Partly because the mill is close to our development center in Karlstad, Sweden, and also because we've always had a very good relationship with Bäckhammar," says David Elfman, Sales Manager at Valmet.

OptiBin reduces fiber loss and environmental impact
Valmet's new OptiBin can be used in various cooking processes. The innovations in the OptiBin design bring several benefits. The design allows chips to flow smoothly and results in even pre-steaming and less runnability problems. Without good pre-steaming before cooking the cooking liquor will not penetrate the whole chip and results in uncooked chips.
The flow design allows a cold top to be used. This means that the bin itself will form a lid of chips that disables gases to flow to the atmosphere which results in less odors to the surroundings.
Thanks to the new chip bin, Nordic Paper estimates an increase in production of about 1,000 Adt/yr. In addition, the OptiBin has led to substantial fiber savings, and as a bonus for those living nearby the mill, it is expected to minimize malodorous emissions into the environment.
