Although the word board could be reminiscent of a wooden board, the classic game boards are made of cardboard, usually greyboard.

Classic board games are chess, checkers, Nine Men's Morris, backgammon etc.

In the 20th century, broad sections of the population in Europe and America had free time for the first time that was not filled with work and household chores. This made board games popular, which were marketed from the 2nd half of the 19th century. For example, Ludo was sent to military hospitals during the First World War so that soldiers could pass the time. Monopoly became popular as a game for when people were unemployed during the Great Depression.

Classic board games that came on the market in the 19th and 20th centuries include Halma, Ludo, Monopoly, Risk, Cluedo, etc.

While in most countries it is mainly classic board games that are played, in German-speaking countries a diverse scene has developed around author's games. In the USA, board games are therefore often called "German Games" and later "Eurogames".
