The measure is expected to reduce the annual greenhouse gas emissions of Essity's paper mill by 11,000 to 13,000 tons. The company is investing €3.4 million in the project.

According to the company, the steam storage tank weighs 100 tons, has a diameter of 4.3 meters, and is 34 meters long. It is used for pulp production and enables the storage of excess steam produced when demand is low. This steam can be released again when needed, improving energy efficiency and operational processes.

The Mannheim plant is Essity's largest European plant. In addition to the steam storage tank, a modern wet electrostatic precipitator is currently being installed, which Essity says is considered a flagship project in sulfite pulp production.

According to Essity, it produces wood- and straw-based pulp in Mannheim. The company also produces 283,000 tons of hygiene paper on five PMs.
