Korean designer creates lamps from McDonald's paper bags

In May 2023, the Side Gallery in Barcelona opened an exhibition that included lamps made by young Korean designer Gyuhan Lee from recycled McDonald's bags. The unique pieces were sold out in no time, and museums are also among his customers.

The focus of his work is his own concrete consumption of brands that he likes and uses in his everyday life. The Korean artist already gained fame with his first series, for which he created furniture from Nike shoe boxes.

During the corona pandemic, he often ordered burgers from McDonald's and collected the paper bags they came in. He recycled the fast food chain's paper bags and turned them into stylish light fixtures.

Gyuhan Lee arranges the McDonald's logo into a repeating pattern, and traditional Korean paper hanji gives the lamps a handcrafted touch. In this way, he bridges the texture of the Asian paper, the shape of the lamp and the logo of the American brand - a connection between East and West.
