Paper from coffee grounds - recycling options for coffee grounds

In the EU alone, around one million tonnes of waste material is generated from coffee grounds every year. The Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT's "InKa" project aims to research the conversion of commercially produced coffee grounds into high-quality intermediate products.

The coffee grounds are first processed into high-quality intermediate products, which can then be used to produce bioplastics and additives for different types of paper. The de-oiled coffee grounds are being analysed as an alternative raw material for the paper and cardboard industry.

The project partner BellePapier GmbH will carry out application tests with de-oiled coffee grounds after production of the intermediate products and evaluate the results of the project. The de-oiled coffee can be a good raw material supplement for special types of paper and cardboard, as it contains cellulose - very similar to the fibre from which paper is made. However, coffee grounds could also be interesting as a processing aid.
