Behind the saying "paper is patient" is the fact that many things can easily be written down without any consequences. This applies not only to agreements, but also to untruths.

One example is the election promises of politicians, who often forget their promises very quickly after the election. Lurid articles in the tabloid press, which are based at most on a grain of truth, also fall into this category.

Incidentally, the phrase goes back to the Roman writer and politician Cicero. However, he wrote "epistula non erubescit," which translates as "the letter does not blush."

So the letter knows no shame and does not blush, no matter what is written in it. This later gave rise to the expression "paper is patient".
