Sappi Europe: Committed to sustainability – at the Kirkniemi plant and of course also for Magno Web
News General news
Sappi Europe has placed its Magno Web paper range at the heart of its sustainability development. Production of the main basis weights has been completely relocated to the Kirkniemi mill in Lohja, Finland. Building on significant investments in renewable energy and clean electricity, Magno Web benefits from Kirkniemi's decarbonized production without compromising on quality or performance. The product range has achieved a 58% reduction in its carbon footprint compared to the previous production site.
Magno Web is a high-quality coated paper range used in publishing, advertising, and premium printing applications. Customers appreciate it for its consistent image reproduction, balanced whiteness and opacity, and choice of glossy or satin finishes, ensuring both performance and versatility.
In 2023, the Kirkniemi mill successfully transitioned to renewable energy sources, reducing its (direct) Scope 1 emissions from production by 90%. By supplying the site with clean electricity, (indirect) Scope 2 emissions have also been eliminated, making Kirkniemi a benchmark for sustainable paper production.
These investments also support customers' efforts to reduce their own carbon footprint, which directly impacts the reduction of their Scope 3 emissions—that is, the indirect emissions associated with the purchase of goods and services.
The transformation of the paper mill in Kirkniemi is one of nearly 80 projects listed in Sappi Europe's 2020-2025 decarbonization roadmap. These projects make a significant contribution to achieving Sappi's science-based 2030 targets.
"Sappi Europe's decarbonization has accelerated dramatically since 2020. We are proud to have significantly exceeded our 2025 CO2 reduction targets despite challenging economic conditions ," says Sarah Price, Director of Sustainability at Sappi Europe. "For us, this is about much more than just emissions. It's about investing now in long-term positive change and enabling our customers to do the same."
While our Gallery product family previously demonstrated the impact of Sappi's decarbonization efforts, achieving a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions by the end of 2024, extending these measures to Magno Web underscores Kirkniemi's role as a sustainable, high-tech hub for the production of coated and uncoated paper. Furthermore, both the Magno Web and Gallery product ranges are available as PEFC-certified (PEFC/07-32-76) or FSC-certified (FSC-C015022TM) products upon request.
These advances align with global climate targets and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 on climate action, and reinforce Sappi's commitment to reducing combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 41.5% by 2030 (from 2019).
