Since 2018, Malaysia has held the world record for the largest banknote. The spectacular 600-ringgit commemorative banknote issued by Bank Negara Malaysia measures an impressive 370 x 220 millimetres, surpassing all previous record holders.
Origin and significance of the record-breaking banknote
Bank Negara Malaysia issued this extraordinary commemorative banknote on 5 January 2018. It commemorates the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Malayan Federation’s Independence Agreement – a historic milestone for the country.
The banknote surpassed the previous record holder: a Philippine 100,000-peso commemorative banknote from 1998, measuring 356 x 216 millimetres. This, in turn, had surpassed a Chinese banknote from the 14th century (Ming Dynasty) measuring 225 x 340 millimetres.
Can you pay with it?
As an official commemorative banknote issued by the Malaysian central bank, the 600-ringgit note is theoretically legal tender. In practice, however, it is used exclusively by collectors and for commemorative purposes. The high face value of 600 ringgit (around 130 euros) and the unusual size make it unsuitable for everyday transactions.
