Doilies are sheets of "food-grade" lace paper that are cut and punched to resemble real lace fabric. They were originally intended only in round form for underlaying cakes, but are now made in other shapes as well.

They serve as decoration, but are also intended to "catch" fat and liquids from the baked goods. In addition, they are often placed under the transport packaging of cakes, in which case they serve here as a protective layer between the cake base and the transport box.

Doilies are used in confectioneries, patîsseries, gastronomy such as cafes, but can also be purchased for private use in larger supermarkets and household stores. They are usually white, but are sometimes offered in different colors or with motif printing.
