Blowing Your Nose: Why You Shouldn't Use Kitchen Paper or Toilet Paper
News News blog
A runny nose is annoying, and everyone wants to get rid of it quickly. However, when reaching for a tissue, you shouldn't just use any paper. Kitchen paper and toilet paper are not a good choice when your nose is red and runny. We explain why.
Too Harsh for the Sensitive Nasal Skin
The skin inside the nose is very delicate. Kitchen paper, and especially toilet paper, are simply too rough for it. The coarse surface can irritate the nasal mucosa and, in the worst case, even injure it. Blowing your nose then becomes even more unpleasant. Moreover, the rough paper towels absorb moisture, which can dry out the nasal mucosa and lead to further irritation.
Avoiding Clogged Toilets
Another important reason why you shouldn't blow your nose with kitchen or toilet paper: The paper towels don't dissolve well in water. If you dispose of them in the toilet, they can clog the sewage system. This also applies to moist toilet paper and cosmetic tissues. Always dispose of used paper in the household waste.
Tissues Are More Suitable
Instead, opt for soft paper tissues or cloth handkerchiefs. These are specially designed for sensitive skin. They don't further irritate the nose and don't leave lint. Special tissues with balm or aloe vera provide additional care for the stressed skin.
Tips for the Cold Season
Some tips help to avoid overstressing the nose during a cold:
- Blow your nose gently and don't blow too hard
- It's better to blow more frequently and more gently
- Regularly moisten the nasal mucous membranes, e.g., with saline or nasal spray
- Ensure sufficient humidity in the room
